Although you need to kind of adjust with it's new more polished and complex system of the card game. And some of the Puzzles may be too difficult. Once you learn to play it. It becomes really satisfying, The Story and the Writing and the encounters and choices consequences is great in my opinion especially for a card game, The Art and Narrative is very unique as well. I recommend this game for people who loved playing Gwent from the previous main game Witcher 3 and for someone who has read the books too. Especially when Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia is the main protagonist of this game. The one Queen who Knighted the famous Witcher Geralt of Rivia after the Battle of the Bridge in Yaruga. Cousin of the Queen Calanthe of Cintra who is the Grand Mother of famous Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon..Long Review (More Details):I really liked the art style and the narrative of this game. It's very unique. The story and the characters the soundtrack and the immersion it's good enough as well. I really like the main protagonist of this game. Queen Meve of Rivia and Lyria personally before mainly because of her appearance on the books at Battle of the Bridge in Yaruga. This game made me like her even more. Because i finally had access to her story written by CDPR, compared to the books where she had only very few appearance but a very good one though. Could be different to you but that's my opinion about the main protagonist of this game. So, now for the gameplay itself. First off the Gwent on this game is not exactly the same from the previous main games. It's more detailed and complex with more card perks that affects the match overall. Which kind of makes the Gwent Battles kind of unbalanced, sometimes you being overpowered and sometimes the enemies having more card perks that makes them much more powerful than you. But once you learned to play along with it. It's really becomes satisfying to play especially with more narrative from certain characters that speaks while you are in gwent match. However, i personally don't like the side puzzles with only 1 rule to win gwent matches of this game. Because it's just too difficult to solve it in my opinion. I always ending up searching the internet or just completely ignoring them. And some boss battles kind of has that "1 Puzzle Rule to Win the Game" too that makes it very difficult to defeat. Like the 1st boss battle and the Yaruga Monster boss battle and the last boss battle. Could be different scenario compared to others though. Also, other than the Gwent and the Puzzles you might not like the way the protagonist just moves on the map and pick up golds, woods, etc too. Because frankly that's what you will mainly do on this game aside from Gwent. But while you are doing that there are some NPC's and unique encounters with dialogues and story behind them that are interesting in the world itself while you are doing those. So, that kind of makes it really decent for me because some of them are really interesting enough for me to think about my actions that has consequences in the end. This is a supposed to be only Card Game after all and having that here is a good thing so i liked it enough. After all this is not even a AAA game. Pros:- Narrative Feels Like a Book Story Which i Absolutely Liked Mostly From This Game- Good Gameplay- Interesting Encounters with Narratives and Decision Consequences- Interesting Story - Good Writing- Great Character Development Cons- Most of the Puzzles is too Difficult to Solve- Some Boss Battles Are too Difficult to Defeat- Might Not Be For Everyone Kind of Game Even For Some People Who Loved Gwent From the Previous Main Games- Still Might Not Be For People Who Despises and Dislikes the Gwent From Main Games and the Standalone Gwent Game.- You Need to Learn and Adjust For This Game to Fully Learn to Play it Well.Rating On Each Aspect- Story: 8\/10- Gameplay: 7.5\/10- Atmosphere: 8\/10- Soundtrack: 8\/10- Voice Acting: 9\/10- World: 8.5\/10- Dialogue: 8.5\/10- Content: 7\/10- Value: 7.5\/10. What an amazing griping tale with interesting characters of a Queen named Meve against all odds, and the perfect cameo of Gwevalf... of Wivia.. I don't get it. I loved Witcher 3, I liked Witcher 2 and Gwent, but I am bored to death by Thronebreaker. Every fight is a puzzle with special rules giving you no reason to deck-build or use any cards you pick up. The writing is melodramatic, the story is dull and familiar. Check the map, get the pick-up, check the map, get the pick-up, unremarkable story bit, solve fight-puzzle, check the map, get the pick-up, check the map. It's a slog to play. I want to like it. I'd even prefer to hate it, but I'm almost completely indifferent and playing it feels like wasting my time. I wanted a well-written RPG, but Gwent. Thronebreaker is none of those things, it's not even Gwent. And if you buy Thronebreaker on Steam you can't use the Gwent rewards you find in-game. Seriously? Everyone seems to adore this game, every part of it, and I just....I don't get it.. Most of the Game was really interesting and exciting about using the Decks and Lore and stuff at all!But for gods sake what is this endfight? The hardest fight compared to them all so far and not even being able to adjustable. The enemy starts with 90 cards deck, gets another on one of his rows if one is destroyed and has several RNG "I draw 3 cards and get 2 plus for all" wtf?. Game mechanics are very linear with very little room for creativity\/style.Very much not like the other witcher games, felt very grindy.. Not bad for a card-game, in game you have to make many decisions and can't regret, i don't know if I made the right choice, the queen of Mi's son will not die. but this is the game, very good one;At last, Geralt and Dandlane come out help the queen, that's very nice.. So then, show of hands. Who all here enjoyed them some Witcher novels? Blood of Elves, anyone? Did anyone here want to know what King Foltest, King Vizimir, Queen Meve, Henselt, and King Demavend did in the wake of their stormy roundtable meeting?Well, this game's story takes place from the ruler's perspective, as Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia attempts to stabilize her country while trying to deal with the onslaught of invading forces from Nilfgaard. For anyone that enjoyed the f2p Gwent game from GoG, I'm sure you must be looking forward to this; I know I was.Why then, has this review received a thumbs down from me? Because you don't bloody get to play Gwent like a card game. Throne Breaker expects you to play it like a freaking puzzle. Remember how it was nice and simple, the side with the highest power value wins? And later went on to revise cards to attack the cards of opponents? Well, that's still there, but not in a way that really matters. This game only wants you to win battles by fulfilling some very specific criteria. One example that sticks out is when Meve and her men encounter a torn up farm, where some livestock were being attacked by a cow that went rabid. So the victory conditions are to put the mad cow down. Weird, but easy enough on paper. Well, you better put that cow down quick, because it's surrounded by other cows on the other side of the field, and it will actually attack them each turn. If even ONE of those cows die, you automatically lose. This thing is built like a tank, and the game expects you to win before your second turn is up. Another example that REALLY riled me up in all the wrong ways was when I had Meve attempt to execute the mouthy envoy from Nilfgaard. He doesn't do anything but absorb punishment, with 20 armor points on top of 4 life points. If I don't correctly combo all my cards to do lethal damage to him in ONE TURN, his armor points will automatically reset at the beginning of his next turn. The game does not allow me to make changes to my deck, and the match will give me the exact same card draws for both those battles. And no, the game doesn't care if I have a higher score than my opponents at the end of each round. Oh! And I almost forgot, Throne Breaker is very allergic to letting the player have matches that are 2 out of 3; nine times out of ten, it will expect you to win the entire match with one decisive round. Those are just two of many frustrating matches I've had during the course of my time with Throne Breaker. Does the story make up for it? Maybe, but not even at my most bored and restless hours of my life will I ever play it again. This game is tedium personified, and a case study on awful, banal game design. This actually feels like a game the developer made for a fanbase it genuinely hates, or at least is oozing with contempt for. I seriously expected better, CDPR. Did you set the bar so high with Witcher 3 that you can't even surpass it? I'm already leery enough about Cyberpunk 2077 since someone had the bright idea of putting Lady Gaga in it.. I thoroughly enjoyed Thronebreaker, and give it a full 10\/10. It's really quite brilliant. The writing is superb, and the voice acting really brings the story to life.As for Gwent, well, it's much improved over the original Witcher 3 version, and the battles in Thronebreaker are tailored to fit the story, with special cards and rules. I rarely got bored in the 55 hours it took me to finish.Make no mistake, this is another epic tale from the Witcher universe, and a highly recommend it.......but a couple of things worth knowing before you buy:1. Witchers feature very little in Thronebreaker. This is more a story of rulers and their armies.2. If you buy Thronebreaker on Steam, you can't unlock the perks in Gwent on GOG. You'll need to buy the GOG version to do that.. First things first: This is not Gwent, the card system is somewhat based off of Gwent but much more intricate and complex. Just for those of you who aren't entirely sure about that.I initially bought this game to have a relaxed, laid-back offline game I could play every now and then. After a few hours, I got extremely invested in the story and characters on a similar level like in Witcher 3.Running around the map and collecting resources and recruits, upgrading your camp and crafting your cards is a ton of fun. Your choices have minor gameplay and story impacts as in:You killed some dude and thus missed out on a secret that would have granted you 400 Gold.orYou investigated this and it was a trap and you lost 8 recruits. That kind of stuff. I've only finished the first map and recently transitioned to the second so I can't tell if choices will have major impacts later on.The protagonist looks a little bit out of place when you wander around the map which is due to the character inking that can't be turned off. There is a thick black outline around Meve and I think it makes her look weird. In the dialogue scenes it fits in well, because everything is drawn that way but while exploring it just looks weird. As for the card gameplay itself: I like it, it's a lot of fun and offers a ton of different tactics. For example, I was able to summon 7 additional cards from my deck using a combination of 4 cards and absolutely crushed the enemy. Those moments feel really good and satisfying. Some cards have special abilities that you can use to attack enemy cards, but aside from those there is no combat, so it's not like in MTG, Hearthstone, or Elder Scrolls Legends. You also have no mana pool, instead every turn you can play one card and activate your cards special abilties if available. You also do not draw any new cards unless a special ability allows you to do that or a new round has begun.Like in Gwent from TW3, the standard card games (there are also special card games like puzzle or story relevant ones with special rules and special cards) are based on a 2 out of 3 rounds basis and the winner is whoever has the highest strength. Unlike in Gwent though, there are only 2 card rows and they are not restricted to specific card types either. The pacing in the game is really well made, you don't get dragged from one 15 minute battle into another, the standard battles are far apart from each other so that you don't feel weary too quickly. Usually you go from Story to Exploring\/Gathering to Special\/Puzzle to Point of Interest and back toward Exploring\/Gathering to another Battle or Story.Yet another great game made by CDPR. Overall an 8\/10 from me, great game with a few minor annoyances.. MORE CONTENT PLEASE
